REGULAR MEETING: May 15 2007

I. ADOPT AGENDA: Adopted agenda as presented

II. RECOGNITION

  1. SWHS and PCHS Archery Team Members: Recognized Southwestern HS archery team for a regional championship and runner-up in the state competition and Pulaski County HS archer, Chad Leigh for his first place finish in the state finals. Chad will advance to the national competition in June. 
  2. Shelbie Phelps, NMS Future Problem Solving State Champion: Recognized Northern Middle’s Shelbie Phelps for placing first of 94 participants in state competition for Individual Future Problem Solving and numerous other problem solving competition awards.
  3. Area Technology Center, State Skills USA Winners: Recognized regional winners, David Maxfield (2nd place Carpentry), Michael Pickerell (1st place Carpentry), Natalie Hettmansperger (1st place Extemporaneous Speaking), Brittany Halcomb (1st place Extemporaneous Writing), and Jordan Woodall (1st place Computer Repair). Michael Pickerell also won first place in Carpentry 1 at the state level.
  4. Skyler Luttrell, 2007 Winner Oak Hill Elem Idol Singing Contest: Skyler performed “Bless the Broken Road” by Rascal Flatts for the Board.
  5. District Volunteers: Recognized District Volunteers of the Year Mary Wright (Burnside Elementary), Randy Blevins (Eubank Elementary), Donna Foster (Memorial Education Center), Sandra Chaney (Nancy Elementary), Michelle Petty (Northern Middle and Pulaski County High School), Kelli Robinson (Oak Hill Elementary), Glenn Price (Pulaski Day Treatment), Velma Vaught (Pulaski Elementary), Tammy Price (Shopville Elementary), Brenda Russell (Southern Elementary), Joyce Turpin (Southern Middle), Tenna & Terry Zimmerman (Southwestern High School), and Sherry Bullock (Woodstock Elementary).
  6. PRISM Recipients: Recognized Elementary level recipient, Cathy Childers from Oak Hill Elementary, Middle School level recipient, Ann Morris from Northern Middle, High School level recipients, Dennis Guinn from Southwestern High School, Wayne Craft from Pulaski County High School and Col. David Shaffer from Southwestern High School.

III. COMMUNICATIONS/REPORTS

  1. Certified/Classified/Approved Volunteers Personnel Actions: Reported to Board.
  2. Student Drop Out Report: 2.3%
  3. Superintendent’s Report: Assistant Superintendent Steve Butcher updated the Board on various facility renovations including grandstand/ concession project at Pulaski County High School, concession building and four-classroom addition at Northern Middle School, administration wing renovation to begin at Nancy Elementary, and classroom addition to Day Treatment.  Superintendent Tim Eaton announced the next round of Board and Council meetings to tentatively begin next September for the northern schools; “E-meeting” demonstration tentatively scheduled for June board meeting as “paperless” and electronic format for future board meetings to be considered and renewal of “One Call Now” communication system for upcoming school year.

  1. Treasurer’s Report/Authorize Payment of Bills: Approved
  2. Tentative Working Budget 2007-2008: Approved
  3. Create/Amend/Abolish Personnel Positions: Approved
  4. Approve Board Resolution to Contract, Lease, and Option with the Pulaski County School District Finance Corporation: Approved
  5. Recess to School District Finance Corporation Meeting
  6. Accept/Award Bid Northern Middle School Classroom Addition: Bid awarded to Roberts Construction
  7. Code of Acceptable Behavior and Attendance Policy 2007-2008: Approved.
    Noted changes included “No pass, No drive”, incorporate drug testing policy
    language and excused absences limited to 16 days per year with 3 parent
    notes per semester.
  8. Out of State Trip Requests: Approved

    1. Burnside Elementary Beta Club, New York
    2. Northern Middle School Future Problem Solving, Colorado— Approval contingent upon receipt of trip insurance.
    3. Southwestern High School Football Team Camp, Purdue University,  Approval contingent upon approved charter bus line.

  2. Athletic Training/Therapy Contract Renewal 2007-2008: Approved Total Rehab Center
  3. Textbook Adoption Social Studies 2007-2008: Approved
  4. UNITE Contract Renewals 2007-2008: Approved continued funding for three drug/alcohol counselors
  5. NCLB Contract with Somerset Community College 2007-2008: Approved contract between SCC and the PCBOE allowing college students to tutor elementary age students with reading and math skills. Students are paid through the Federal Work Study Program.
  6. Early Graduation Requests: Approved
  7. Summer Feeding Participation 2007-2008: Approved summer feeding
  8. Addendum to Approved Vendors List: Approved addition of Home Depot, Knoxville, TN and Willie Silvers of Somerset to Approved Vendors List.
  9. Requests to Declare Surplus Property: Declared various food service equipment and board vehicles as surplus property.
