Gifted and Talented Identification Process

Criteria for Gifted and Talented Identification 

Formal gifted identification students must have a minimum of three pieces of evidence is listed below along with a committee recommendation. Academic areas must include a qualifying test score unless a child has a documented special consideration (e.g. disability, disorder, socio-economic issues, etc.). Visual art identifications must have an audition or portfolio. Students may qualify in more than one category providing they have three pieces of evidence and a committee recommendation for each category.

 

General Intellectual

  • NNAT3 score of 96%ile or above
  • CogAT
  • OLSAT score of 96%ile or above
  • Continuous progress data in academic areas
  • Teacher recommendation/Checklist inventories of behaviors specific to General Intellectual
  • Anecdotal records (Teacher or parent)
  • Committee recommendation for General Intellectual

Specific Academic Aptitude in Language Arts

  • MAP scores of 96%ile or above in a calendar year
  • STAR Reading score at 96%ile or above
  • Stanford 10 of 96%ile or above
  • Continuous progress data in Language Arts
  • Teacher Recommendation/Checklist inventories of behavior specific to Language Arts
  • Alternative off-level testing score at 96%ile or above
  • Anecdotal records (Teacher or parent)
  • Committee recommendation for Language Arts

Specific Academic Aptitude in Math

  • MAP Math scores at 96%ile or above in a calendar year
  • Stanford 10
  • Continuous progress data in Math
  • Teacher Recommendation/Checklist inventories of behavior specific to Math
  • Alternative off-level testing score at 96th %ile or above
  • Anecdotal records (Teacher or parent)
  • Committee recommendation for Math

Specific Academic Aptitude in Science

  • MAP
  • Stanford 10
  • Continuous progress datain Science
  • Teacher Recommendation/Checklist inventories of behavior specific to Science
  • Alternative off-level testing at 96%ile or above
  • Anecdotal records (Teacher or parent)
  • Committee recommendation for Science

Specific Academic Aptitude in Social Studies

  • Stanford 10
  • Continuous progress data in Social Studies
  • Teacher Recommendation/Checklist inventories of behavior specific to Social Studies
  • Alternative off-level testing at 96%ile or above

  • Committee recommendation for Social Studies

Creativity

  • Creativity Self-Assessment

Leadership

Visual and Performing Arts

Art

  • V/PA Art Self-Assessment
  • Portfolio pieces (at least 3 samples of student work)

  • Anecdotal records (Teacher or parent)
  • Art Parent Questionnaire
  • Committee recommendation for Art (Includes a critique from an art expert outside of the recommending school)

Drama

  • V/PA Drama Self-Assessment
  • Performance tapes (at least 3 samples of student work)
  • Teacher recommendation(s)/Checklist inventories of behaviors specific to Drama
  • Productions in or outside of school
  • Awards/Honors received
  • Anecdotal records (Teacher or parent)
  • Drama Parent Questionnaire
  • Committee recommendation for Drama (Includes a critique from a drama expert outside of the recommending school)

Dance

  • V/PA Dance Self-Assessment
  • Performance tapes (at least 3 samples of student work)
  • Teacher recommendation(s)/Checklist inventories of behaviors specific to Dance
  • Recommendations from private teacher
  • Awards/Honors received
  • Anecdotal records (Teacher or parent)
  • Dance Parent Questionnaire
  • Committee recommendation for Dance (Includes a critique from a dance expert outside of the recommending school)

Music

  • V/PA Music Self-Assessment
  • Performance tapes (at least 3 samples of student work)

The Pulaski County School District Gifted and Talented Program works with V/PA teachers throughout the school district to identify children with potential for giftedness in visual and performing arts.
