This is the first year that NMS has competed in Community Problem Solving (CmPS). CmPS is a service learning activity in which students identify an area of concern in their community and then create an action plan to combat that problem. Northern had four CmPS projects competing at State Finals this year. All four will be advancing to international competition.
Northern's Junior CmPS team, Project P.A.W.P.R.I.N.T., was named State Grand Champion in the Junior Division advancing them to international competition. This project focuses on improving the quality of life for pets in Pulaski County. Team members include: Mackenzi Cooper, Brittany Ferrell, Evan Holbrook, Andrea Jenkins, Kelly Shoopman, Shellbie Sutton, Alexisa Toro, and Sarah Wiles.
Northern's Middle Grades CmPS team, Project H.O.P.E., was named State Runner Up in the Middle Grades Division. This project focuses on preparing Pulaski Countians for potential disasters that could occur in the community. Team members include Cameron Bryant, Casey Clark, Ben Crawford, Shelbie Phelps, Haley Stockham, Steven Thompson, and Zach Wooldridge. This project will be submitted as an at-large bid to the international competition.
Evan Holbrook was named the Junior Division Individual CmPS Grand Champion for his work on the B.U.D.D.Y. Project which pairs students from NMS's FMD unit with student volunteers who provided educational and social activities for the students. Shelbie Phelps was named the Middle Grades Division Individual CmPS Grand Champion for her work on Project D.A.Y.C.A.R.E. Shelbie helped to establish libraries in both Judy's Day Care and Little Oaks Academy Daycare earlier this year. Both of these projects will also advance to the international competition.
Northern also had three Future Problem Solving teams competing in State Finals.
NMS's Middle School FPS team was named the District and Regional Governor's Cup Champions earlier this year to advance them to State Finals. Northern was named State Runner up in the Middle Grades division narrowly losing to Johnson County Middle School who has won numerous state and international titles in Future Problem Solving. They will now compete for the international title in Colorado later this year. Team members include: Rossi Clark, Emma Fain, Shelbie Phelps, and Zach Wooldridge. NMS had two junior division teams to advance to state finals. Northern Middle School Team 1 finished third in the competition. Team members include: Mackenzi Cooper, Brittany Ferrell, Andrea Jenkins, and Sarah Wiles. Northern Middle School team 2 finished eighteenth in the competition. Team members include: Gerek Patrick, Kelly Shoopman, Shellbie Sutton, and Alexisa Toro.
Northern's CmPS and FPS teams are coached by NMS Band Director Scott Sexton. This will be Mr. Sexton's third straight appearance at the international competition. Last year, his Junior CmPS team at Turner Intermediate School in Monticello, KY were named the FPSP International Grand Champions. He hopes that his new teams will be able to enjoy similar success this year. The team would like to thank Pam Butcher, J O Rose, Lana Mayfield, and the wonderful faculty and staff at NMS for their contributions to the teams this year. They would also like to thank the administration at NMS and the Pulaski County Board of Education for their support of the program.
