This page contains information about RTI initiatives in the Pulaski County School System related to behavior (School-wide Systems of Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports - PBIS).
The Pulaski County Schools have partnered with the Kentucky PBIS Network (KYCID) to implement PBIS strategies. We currently have 12 schools enrolled in the KY PBIS Network. We are also a demonstration district for the KY PBIS Network.
PBIS in Pulaski County...what's new!
Staff at Memorial Education Center participated in a training by Sonia Michael from the Berea Early Childhood Regional Training Center on 1/26/18. The training was on the Pyramid Model for Social Emotional Learning. Information from this training will be used to advance PBIS initiatives specifically designed for preschoolers.
Southwestern High School and Pulaski County High School were invited to present at the 2017 Behavior Institute. Their session title was PBIS in High Schools: Making It Work at All Three Tiers. Below is the PowerPoint presentation from that session:

We have three schools celebrating 10 years of PBIS implementation in our district. These schools are the first to meet this milestone. Congratulations to Pulaski Elementary, Shopville Elementary, and Northern Middle School!
Northern Middle School and Southern Middle School have been implementing PBIS since 2006-07 and 2007-08 respectively. Over the years, these schools have seen lots of staff and administration changes (as have many others). The Leadership Teams for both of these schools are retooling during the 2015-16 school year by having their Tier 1 Leadership Teams go through a newly developed training series made available by the Kentucky Center for Instructional Discipline. KYCID provides an initial day of orientation training, followed by a series of training modules that the leadership teams can work through on their own at their own pace. The training series concludes with a final day of face-to-face training wrap-up. This seems like a great way to retool PBIS Leadership Teams! In 2014 Pulaski County Schools participated with KDE and KET in the development of a video series designed to promote PBIS in schools and on the bus. The videos in this series can be found here.
Several schools in Pulaski County went through PBIS Tier 2/3 Training during the 2013-14 and 2014-15 school years. These schools have identified a small team of individuals to lead the school's efforts in this area. These teams will attend four days of training sponsored by the Kentucky Center for Instructional Disciple. To learn more about Tier 2, just follow this link.
In May of 2013 the Pulaski County PBIS Network sponsored a district-wide competition to see which schools have the best PBIS visuals in their buildings.
Some of you may be asking, “What is a PBIS visual?” PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports. It is an approach designed to help schools systematically implement effective practices for improving student behavior and ultimately academic performance. A PBIS visual is anything that a school displays to help teach or promote PBIS concepts in the school setting. You can learn more about PBIS at this link or by watching this video. The Pulaski County PBIS Network would like to welcome some new schools to our network for the 2012-13 school year! Memorial Education Center and Pulaski County High School both enrolled with KYCID for the 2012-13 year. Welcome to the network!
These schools have completed the first two days of Tier 1/Universal Level Training and are now beginning with implementation. Two additional training dates will be scheduled later in the year. Thanks for committing to be proactive and instructional in supporting the students in your buildings!
Several schools from Pulaski County were recognized for their efforts with implementing Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) at the 2012 Kentucky PBIS Coach's Conference held in Louisville in June. The Kentucky Center for Instructional Discipline (Kentucky's lead agency for implementing PBIS) is working with around 350 schools across the state to implement school-wide PBIS. On a measure of fidelity of implementation (BoQ), about 205 across the state scored at a level suggesting proficiency in implementation. Seven schools from Pulaski County scored at this level and were recognized at the conference with a banner to hang in their schools. The seven schools were Eubank Elementary, Nancy Elementary, Northern Elementary, Northern Middle School, Pulaski Elementary, Shopville Elementary and Southern Elementary. Congratulations to each of these schools!
The Pulaski County Schools Transportation Department trained all bus drivers in the critical elements of Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) in June of 2012. Southern Elementary hosted the District PBIS Coach's Meeting on January 25th, 2012. During this meeting data was shared about discipline issues on the bus, and schools shared strategies and initiatives related to improving student behavior on the bus. Southern Elementary has posted new bus expectation signs in their bus loading/unloading zone. Pictures are below:
Several schools from Pulaski County were recognized for their efforts with implementing Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) at the 2011 Kentucky PBIS Networking Conference held in Louisville in June. The Kentucky Center for Instructional Discipline (Kentucky's lead agency for implementing PBIS) is working with around 300 schools across the state to implement school-wide PBIS. About 100 of these schools were scored at a level to be identified as successfully implementing. Six schools from Pulaski County scored at this level and were recognized at the conference and provided with a banner to hang in their schools. The six schools were Northern Middle School, Pulaski Elementary, Nancy Elementary, Northern Elementary, Shopville Elementary and Southern Elementary. Congratulations to each of you!

Pulaski County is proud to announce that we now have a district-wide bus PBIS initiative. All of the bus drivers have received training and we are ready to begin teaching a common set of behavioral expectations for bus behavior to all students in the district! Mustang Impact: Supporting Whole Child Wellness
Learn how Pulaski Elementary collaborates with community agencies to provide group counseling services to students in need of additional support in areas of grief, divorce, anger management, decision-making tolerance and relational aggression. Counseling is provided to many students that would otherwise not be served and the program operates on an almost zero budget. Groups support the RTI process. Participants will get an overview of two unique specific activities designed for large groups. Very Important Girls and No Girls Allowed were created to promote team building, tolerance and reduce relational aggression.

Using the “On-Site PBIS Walkthrough” to Keep Schools Focused
The On-Site PBIS Walkthrough tool is meant for use as a quick glance when visiting a school to see if School-wide PBIS is Evident. It will allow the observer to provide feedback to the PBIS team and administration. Learn how Pulaski County’s Coaches have been using this tool to keep schools focused.

PBIS on the Bus: How Pulaski County is Getting Started
School buses are classrooms on wheels, and students never stop learning including when they are on the bus! Students in Pulaski County are beginning to learn a new set of behavioral expectations on the bus. Come see how Pulaski County has formed a partnership between school staff and bus drivers to implement Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports with these moving classrooms. Participants will be exposed to the "grass roots" process that has led to PBIS infiltrating the district transportation system.
