The Kentucky Educational Development Corporation (KEDC) honors Mr. Steve Butcher, Superintendent of Pulaski County Schools as 2018 KEDC Superintendent of the Year.
To say that Mr. Steve Butcher has made a positive impact on Pulaski County Schools would be an understatement. Under the leadership of Mr. Butcher, the Pulaski County School System has achieved the designation of Distinguished District six years running and boasts a 100% college/career rate and a 97.8% graduation rate validating that educational programs are focused on results.
Mr. Butcher is a true child advocate with a sincere focus on student relationships. He expects supportive, child centered environments in all our schools and leads by example by facilitating many student programs at the district level.
Mr. Butcher is an active and respected leader in education. He has served on Boards for KASA, KEDC, KASS, KYSPMA, multiple state level workgroups and committees, as well as many local community Boards.
The brief narrative has not left room for all the accolades and accomplishments achieved under the leadership of Mr. Butcher. He was awarded the Excellence in Education Award by the Somerset-Pulaski Chamber of Commerce and named Kentucky Association for School Resource Officers Administrator of the Year. He has established award winning gifted education, school resource officer, and migrant programs; received the first 5 star rating for a public preschool in the state of Kentucky; received national attention for our K-12 Project Lead the Way program; and named to the AP Honor Roll by the College Board three times to name a few.
Mr. Butcher earned a football scholarship to Western Kentucky University where he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree. He later earned a Master’s Degree from Morehead State University and Professional Certificates from Eastern Kentucky University.
Having been a classroom teacher, coach, guidance counselor, principal, and DPP for Mason and Casey County Schools, he later moved to Pulaski County where for the past 19 years been Principal, Assistant Superintendent, and since 2010, Superintendent for Pulaski County Schools.
He is married 43 years to college sweetheart, Pamela Johnston Butcher, a retired teacher, and current regional coordinator for GEARUP. They have two sons, Mark and Brad, two daughter-in-laws, four grandchildren, and are faithful members of East Somerset Baptist Church.
After 37 years in education, Mr. Butcher is a worthy recipient of this most honored award and will continue to represent public education in a manner that will make Pulaski County proud.
